This engineered smoked oak floor has been brushed and oiled and has a truly robust multi-ply base core layer. The boards have been fume smoked giving it a deeply rich tone suited to any living area in the home. Smoked oak is the product of a finishing process called ammonia fuming. The unfinished boards are exposed to the fumes of a concentrated ammonium hydroxide solution. These fumes then react with the tannins in the wood such that they darken, particularly in the grain. This all happens in a large airtight fuming chamber with the flooring distributed in racks so that the fumes can circulate freely around the wood. The amount by which the wood darkens can be controlled both by fuming time and also the strength of the solution.
