Floorsave believe that engineered wood flooring can actually in some cases be better than real wood flooring. So what's the difference? As it sounds, solid wood is a solid piece of timber, cut from a tree milled into a plank, kiln dried and that is pretty much it.
Engineered wood flooring has a bit more work involved as it consists of a multi-ply, cross-laid backing with a veneer top layer of a selected species and design. Therefore, due to its construction, engineered flooring is more dimensionally stable and can be installed in areas where solid wood is not compatible.
Each type of flooring has its specific use and is dictated by lifestyle and need, although visually identical once installation has been completed. Solid wood has been used for hundreds of years but please note, it should be installed in a moisture-controlled environment therefore it is not recommended for areas such as cellars, basements, conservatories or over under-floor heating systems. Due to the regularly changing temperatures of under floor heating, solid wood boards are not recommended as it can cause them to either dry out too much or expand and contract so many times that they start to split and warp. Engineered wood flooring boards do not have this problem and are therefore perfect for homes with under floor heating.
The engineered variety is typically easier to install for the DIY customer and offers a wider range of design, styles and finishes. Also, engineered flooring can be glued-down directly over concrete slabs or stapled down over a wood subfloor.
It is also very robust and durable, unlike solid wood flooring that can be sensitive to any extreme conditions. Engineered flooring consists of layers of plywood underneath. This is a key benefit as it provides additional strength to the flooring. This is because the layers of plywood are laid cross ways; much in the same way the bricks are laid when building a house in order to strengthen its foundations.
